Fringe staple the 27 Club is back in Gluttony for its fifth year at the Adelaide Fringe. Like all good things this season is their last and all the more reason to check it out before it winds up on March 23. If there is a Fringe Hall Of Fame this show and its artists would be in it. Irrespective of your own music tastes there is something for everyone of all ages and heck you might even learning something about that infamous club no body wants to join being the 27 Club.
The iconic names of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Robert Johnson and Kurt Cobain all died before their twenty-eighth birthday leaving behind a wealth of music, history and nostalgia which makes for one hell of a yarn with our very best including Sarah McLeod (The Superjesus), Kevin Mitchell (Jebediah and Bob Evans), Carla Lippis and Dusty Lee Stephenson who all cleverly put their spin and tell the stories of these iconic artists who met their ultimate demise.
It’s seventy minutes of rock history and appreciation wrapped together with some great music from the likes of Smells Like Teen Spirit (Kevin Mitchell) to Roadhouse Blues (Dusty Lee with Kevin on harmonica) and Lithium (Carla) by Nirvana which is undoubtedly one of the best versions you will hear outside of the original. Sarah McLeod presence on this show is enormous with the likes of Mercedes Benz and Piece Of My Heart standing out.
Is the show different? Yep, totally is and this cast have continued to evolve and grow with these songs presenting them differently to when this show was first performed.
There are some tragic tales to be told but equally as important is the legacy of these iconic artists is kept alive by celebrating their music. It would be easy to rattle off the entire set list but better still jump on FringeTix, buy a ticket, take the family, and high tail it down The Fantail at Gluttony to experience it yourself.
