After a hugely successful season in 2024, YOAH returns once again to the Adelaide Fringe with a tighter and more impressive show that will certainly leave audiences gasping in amazement. This impressive circus from Japan features multiple artists who are all at the top of their game. Each routine is more impressive than the last, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. At times, you question everything you’ve learnt about physics and the laws of gravity.
The opening routine features a solo diabolo artist (Chinese yo-yo), and what a way to open. This artist’s routine is spellbinding, and is only enhanced by the perfect synchronisation to an impressive projection of spinning shapes and images that move as the diabolo would pass. This whole routine made you forget that what was happening behind the artists was a projection, but made you really feel as though the diabolo was manipulating and moving the projections.
The next two routines were both great, but they didn’t quite live up to the impressive levels that the opening diabolo artists left. The first of the two routines featured a trapeze artist who performed a series of impressive aerial tricks suspended above the audience. Instead of a traditional trapeze, they used a rope swing. The second of these two acts was a juggler who was adamant to finish their routine. At times, the seven balls got the better of them, but the audience was extremely supportive and encouraging.
Audiences were also treated to a contortionist who performed an incredible routine using a hoop suspended above the stage. The final solo routine was a death-defying balancing act, where the artist stacked six chairs on top of each other before balancing on top of them. The entire tent held their breath right through this routine and burst into a rapturous applause when the artist held their position on top of the final chair, way above the lighting rig of the venue.
There are several more impressive tricks and routines in YOAH, but you will need to see them for yourself — you don’t want to miss the finale!
Running for the whole Fringe, YOAH is a wonderful family-friendly circus that is entertaining, captivating and mesmerising.
