If you’ve seen the hit Fringe show, Come Together – The Beatles Rock Show (which is also playing in Gluttony this year!) then you know Rachel Vidoni. Debuting her latest rock icons show in The Kingfisher at Gluttony, Heartbreak Hotel is a reinterpreting of Elvis Presley’s classics in that famous Rachel Vidoni style.
Clad in a female version of that iconic 60s Comeback Special black leather, the hits of early Elvis were belted out in a medley. Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes and Jailhouse Rock certainly rocked out the tent then finishing off the era with a hauntingly soulful Are You Lonesome Tonight.
Once those hits were done and dusted out came the hits of Elvis’ later years; songs with more substance and style. It’s a mixed bag of Elvis goodies with Edge of Reality. Little Less Conversation, In the Ghetto, CC Rider and of course the big hits Burning Love, and Kentucky Rain. Finishing with Can’t Help Falling in Love, Suspicious Minds and the heart pumping If I Can Dream, Vidoni relishes in singing the more meaningful hits. Choosing a set list of songs that suit her vocal prowess yet still giving the soulful essence of the Elvis versions.
It’s a cabaret show of storytelling, song, and swing; Elvis hip swinging Vidoni style! Half way through the show Vidoni changes into a classic Elvis style pink jumpsuit where she really starts to swing those hips!
The large screen shows images of Elvis, song lyrics and a cute animated video of Vidoni growing up where she pays tribute to her mum when singing Always on My Mind on piano. It’s a one woman show but with a guest appearance of dancer Ricky Jai, where the two get hot and heavy for a sexy version of Fever.
Vidoni has crafted an Elvis show that pays tribute to one of the greatest artists of our time. It’s a show not just for the die-hard Elvis fans. With powerhouse vocals and stage charisma, she brings her unique style to the audience with humorous banter while also encouraging them to participate and sing along.
Vidoni doesn’t imitate an artist she finds the essence in their songs and brings them to life in her own classic rock style. This is no cheesy Elvis impersonation show. Its all rock and soul baby! If you’re feeling Lonesome Tonight then GRAB YA TIX! to this show and you won’t be anymore!
