Honey! Hans is finally 21 and what a party he is throwing at this year’s Adelaide Fringe. Hans: Young, Fun & 21 is a wonderful celebration of all that he has achieved in his 21 years of show business — and what a ride it has been.
I’ve been a longtime fan of Hans and seen many of his brilliant productions, but this latest offering is Hans at his absolute best. This show is packed with everything you have come to love from Hans: choreographed numbers, backup dancers in the tiniest of hot pants, costume changes, hilarious banter with the audiences and of course, Hans and his accordion.
From the moment Hans makes his grand entrance in the Hans-est way possible – from inside a giant cake – he has the audience in the palm of his hand. Hans has a very loyal fan base who were out in force the night I attended Hans: Young, Fun & 21. The front row was composed of members of his ‘Hansy Army’ as he affectionately calls them.
Anyone who has attended a Hans spectacular before knows that no matter where you sit, Hans will find you. He is the master of quick one-liners, lighthearted poking at audience members and wonderful banter. He’s not afraid to laugh at himself, especially if a one liner doesn’t quite land the way it was intended. No topic is off limits, everything and everyone is fodder, and we love Hans for that.
Despite the glitz and hype around the large production numbers in the show, it seems to be Hans’ accordion bracket of his performance that gets the crowd going the most. Moving amongst (and sometimes over and on top of) the audience, Hans performs a brilliant set with just his accordion. Personal favourites included Kylie’s hit Padam Padamand of course the crowd sing-a-long of Edelweiss from The Sound of Music.
Throughout the performance Hans was backed by his brilliant band, The Ungrateful Bastards, and his exceptionally amazing dancers, The Lucky Bitches. They provided a wonderful foundation and support for Hans.
Hans: Young, Fun & 21 is hilarious, entertaining and action packed. It’s a real celebration of one of our, I mean Germany’s, greatest entertainers. The show is high energy and is sure to have you dancing along. If I had half the energy of Hans, I’d be happy!
Grab your friends and join Hans for a party like no other.
