It’s such a simple yet brilliant idea that I’m surprised that no one has thought of it before. Gluttony Liminal takes place, as the title suggests, inside Gluttony. It’s not quite a show though, more like a quest or problem-solving mission that you have to complete within an hour in order to succeed.
Hosted by the delightfully extravagant Carmel Clavin, Gluttony Liminal asks its participants to put down their phones, be present and allow themselves to get out of their comfort zone, if only just a little. What I particularly love about this Adelaide Fringe endeavour is that it’s not the usual sit-down performance. Carmel is not the entertainment for the evening, YOU ARE! That’s quite a clever way to produce a show.
Starting on Champagne Island, participants are asked to meet at a unique-looking lamppost where dancing and chanting are allowed, and silliness is the main aim. Once participants are divided into three groups, they’re all given a task to complete, but only if they can solve a puzzle. Once that puzzle is solved it will direct you to a unique location around Gluttony Parklands where then another task will be given for you to complete. Incorporating music, poems and strange tasks, you never know where you may end up or what goofiness you may get up to. This reviewer had to play a kazoo (which I had to learn how to play from watching a YouTube tutorial) and create a song with other audience members in my group. Luckily for me, I had a great group of participants who were up for anything that Gluttony Liminal threw at us. I think if you were in a group that wasn’t so into this show or who struggled with the tasks, it may not come across as fun.
With a wonderful host, an exciting premise, and a chance to walk around during the performance, Gluttony Liminal is certainly one of the most unique “shows” at the Adelaide Fringe this year. It’s a chance to have fun with family and friends or just meet new people (like I did) and take in the world around you. That’s a joy in itself!
