As a line snaked through the City of Adelaide council building, a buzz grew in the crowd as they waited for the last performance of the highly anticipated show ‘Breaking the Musical.’

Written and starred by Steph Broadbridge, this production was a diamond in the rough, entertaining, tongue-in-cheek, and thought-provoking. Throughout the show, the cast makes it clear that this is a parody and an unauthorised (but completely legal) telling of an Australian Olympian’s journey to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This show was pushed into the media limelight as legal threats ensued for Broadbridge and her team and poignant at a time of unintended consequence ‘Streisand effect’ when artist Vincient Namatjira’s work of Gina Rinehart was at the centre of controversy for and Creative Australia is in the limelight as questions of control of artistic expression.

This cast of creatives pushed through what could have been a ‘breaking’ (pardon the pun) experience. Still, it came through with a show that was sharp witted, harmonies and choreography surprisingly well delivered, and with a cleverly written script and characters you love to hate such as Spraygun’s husband, and comedic acting on point from a narrator, French mime and a gay fairy godfather.

These artists delivered a high-quality musical with a small budget and a live band to boot. From their legal experiences getting it off the ground, the strength and tenacity to deliver such a project was clear in delivery.

The story of Spraygun was wrapped with warmth and humour and a must see as it tours around Australia. Keep your eye out for Adelaide Fringe 2026 because I think this team of musical comedians will only bring something out that is bigger and better.
