As a musician, I am always on the lookout for a live music performance that nourishes my soul. Soweto Gospel Choir – Hope is one of those magical moments that I will cherish for a long time to come.
There was a real sense of anticipation as I entered The Peacock. I have only ever heard wonderful things about the Soweto Gospel Choir, and you could spot fans in the audience who were all carefully selecting their seats to get the best view.
Nothing could have prepared me for this performance. The musicality of the Soweto Gospel Choir is like nothing I’ve ever heard. Their intricate harmonies are perfectly executed. This is indeed a celebration of music. Their musical director explains to the audience that throughout the performance they would be singing in six of the twelve languages represented in the choir, all from a region of South Africa just out of Johannesburg, as well as several gospel pieces in a hybrid of English and native tongue. Throughout this spellbinding performance, several of the choir’s members had the opportunity to take lead vocals. As individuals, their voices are just as impressive as their combined sound.
Accompanying the choir was a brilliant keys player and percussionist. For the most part, the choir performed acapella, but adding in the keys and percussion really elevated the sound when it was needed.
Soweto Gospel Choir – Hope is a jubilant celebration of music, hope and unity. It reminds us that music is a language that we all understand. Take the time out of this busy Fringe to spend an hour with the Soweto Gospel Choir — it will fill your soul.
