Every now and then you stumble across a gem of a show that you want to tell everyone to see. A show that entertains, moves, engages and sparks imagination. Mario the Maker Magician is one of these gems, and before we go any further, go and book tickets — you don’t want to miss this one.

Mario mixes his love of robots, magic and slapstick in an engaging show that captures the hearts and minds of the audience, young and old, right from the beginning. His approach is very reminiscent of the great vaudeville magicians, but with a modern sprinkling of magic. All the tricks performed are his own unique creations, including robots made from boxes, 3D printed props and lots and lots of love. Every trick is perfectly executed and is accompanied by some wonderful stories and banter with the audience.

The show is full of gags, laughter and, at its centre, a wonderful message that everyone can take away. Mario tells a moving story about a teacher who changed his life and set him on the path he now is on. ‘Do what you want. Use what you have. Have fun’ is the message that is weaved throughout, and by the end of the show we all felt like anything is achievable if we put our minds to it.

Another beautiful moment occurred before the show even began, making this show extra special. Mario came out into the audience as people were settling into their seats and engaged with individuals. Building a rapport with the younger members of the audiences helped break down any nerves that may have been there and built a connection with the audiences so there was trust before the show started.

I could continue to wax on about the brilliance that is this show. It is a family show through and through (Mario tours with his wife and two children who assist behind the scenes). There is so much in this 50-minute show that is over in the blink of an eye. No matter your age, this show is perfect for the child in each of us.
