The opening weekend of ‘The Box Show’ by Junkyard Beats attracts an impressive crowd, keeping their young audience engaged despite the sweltering heat on Saturday.
The four eccentric performers are dressed in different eye-catching ensembles, all decorated with brightly coloured scrap fabric. Their storytelling relies entirely on animated body language and creative facial expressions. They are so charismatic, one member of the troupe (Oded Prior) is able to conduct the audience in a hand clapping and foot stomping sympathy. Though we cannot understand their gibberish language, it delights and puzzles the crowd. “Are these people from another country?” one boy asks.
When one of the performers expresses that he is hungry, the others begin a comical kitchen routine reminiscent of The Muppets Swedish Chef. They use pots, pans, and old oil drums to create the rhythm. They can make music out of anything, not just cardboard boxes – recycled drink bottles, traffic cones, crumpled plastic shopping bags and paint buckets. Creativity and a love of reusing and recycling inspire all their routines (and the young minds watching).
For a very rhythmic show, it is surprisingly accessible. It only uses minimal background sound effects, as they create the music live on stage. Therefore the sound is less overwhelming for young audiences. However, if you are sensitive to booming sounds, a pair of noise cancelling headphones are a good idea.
For a clever children’s circus show that does not make your ears bleed, and will impress even the grown ups in attendance, look no further! Junkyard Beats have designed a clever, unique, and astoundingly fun show.
