Multi award-winning show ‘Kaboom!’ returns to the Adelaide fringe for an action-packed hour of explosions, chemical reactions, and electrifying feats which are sure to spark (forgive the pun) even the youngest scientist's imagination.

Hosted by Magnus D Magnus, a questionably responsible adult who is described in the show's opening monologue as – among other things – “the world’s smartest idiot”, ‘Kaboom!’ brings science to life in strange and unexpected ways.

From the moment he steps on stage Magnus (who proudly boasts that the D stands for 'Danger') commands the audience’s attention with his loud, hilariously chaotic and bubbly personality. A natural entertainer, Magnus clearly loves what he does and each experiment is cleverly presented in a child-friendly manner which both educates and entertains. There are plenty of opportunities for audience participation, either through answering questions or taking part in experiments on stage, and Magnus does a great job of supporting and encouraging the children to get involved.

His hyperactive performance style is an obvious hit with the children in attendance at Saturday's show (22 February); although his scatterbrained antics did at times leave this reviewer questioning his qualifications. There are plenty of hilarious moments for adults to enjoy too, and his warning to children about only performing his experiments at school where their friends can see them garnered plenty of laughs.

Due to the nature of some experiments, ‘KABOOM!’ does have moments of increased volume levels, smoke and haze effects and even a fire or two and Magnus handles this with genuine compassion; demonstrating a keen understanding of the needs of those he lovingly terms his “neurospicy” friends. This tailored approach – which includes offering ear protectors upon entry – creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for both children and adults.

Featuring a stage full of interesting machines, handmade contraptions and chemicals including (but not limited to) liquid nitrogen, ‘Kaboom!’ is a fun-filled exploration of chemistry and STEM suitable for children as young as five.

If I had a science teacher like Magnus when I was in school, I may have scored higher on my tests.
