Don’t let the title of this show put you off – this is theatre at its best. It will make you laugh, make you think, and at times it will make you frustrated, but then it will touch your heart and make you want to find all your friends and give them the warmest hug possible.
We meet Billy at the Euro 2020 finals in Wembley. He has gone viral for sticking a flare up his arse. The story is set in the lead up to the final and the moments after. Billy and his friend Adam are football fans, but this passion quickly becomes an obsession when they get mixed up in the wrong crowd.
The script, written and performed by Alex Hill, moves at a cracking pace. It is filled with more twists and turns, ups and down than you would find in a nail-biting football match. Hill narrates the play as Billy. At times he switches, by change of voice and physique, into other key characters of the story. Hill is a very talented young actor. The emotional journey he takes the audience on with Billy is exceptional. Hill, along with director Sean Turner, have pulled every ounce of emotion out this brilliantly written script.
This play is not for the faint hearted — it’s ballsy and hits some heavy content, but is brilliantly executed. Holden Street Theatres have once again brought the best of the Edinburgh Fringe to Adelaide. While it is a challenging piece of theatre, the message hits home hard. Take a chance and see this superb piece of theatre.
