When the genres of magic and comedy combine, apprehension is probably the word that comes to mind. But fear not, you’re in safe hands with Detective (or Dick) Dirk Darrow.
Tim Motley transports us back to the days of prohibition through his character Dirk Darrow as we all solve the mystery of a murder/bank heist. Audience participation is an essential element of this show, and you’ll be secretly hoping to be picked on to help unravel the investigation. Motley is painfully self-aware, very witty and amazingly adaptable in his crowd work. His pace is perfect, with few stumbles and plenty of laughs. Plus, he thrives on the numerous groans at obvious dad-jokes. The magic is seemingly simple but gets more complex and impressive throughout, while appropriate cues from Thomas on lights and sound also add to the 1940s atmosphere. The audience simply can’t take their eyes off Darrow and, by the end, you’ll be a whole lot less jaded and even more intrigued about the genre that is magic comedy.
