In her Gluttony debut, our ‘favourite busty bitch’ Gemma Caruana is back in Adelaide to talk all things boobs with her award-winning cabaret Underwire. Hilarious hit music combined with Caruana’s cheeky and charismatic flair invite us to let loose for an outstanding hour of entertainment.
Underwire follows Caruana’s personal experience growing up with big boobs and isn’t afraid to break through the taboos and speak her truth. Among the bras of many styles and sizes scattered across the stage, her bold voice cuts through, singing with ease as she tells the stories of her teen years: from bright red one-piece swimsuits to ill-fitting theatre costumes, to the breast reduction that changed her life (and almost killed her left nipple). She’s not shy on the juicy details. The second half of the show hits a deeper note, calling out the rising rate of violence against women in Australia.
Caruana fills the space, blending strong vocals and playful wit which demands attention. Underwire is a show to remember, particularly for women facing the struggles of our constantly changing bodies, though its powerful message advocating for women’s empowerment is for all to hear. Caruana is a born entertainer who inspires confidence in audience members of all bra sizes while demanding changes to the status quo around women’s bodies.
Gemma Caruana: Underwire, Gluttony, until Sunday 2 March, 6:45pm
