As far as circus goes, this show is fairly unconventional. But that’s precisely the point, as the performers break stereotypes left, right and centre, creating a powerful performance that delves into the lives of young Taiwanese women.
The evening’s ringmaster wastes no time in getting the audience involved (fair warning for the front row), settling them with a bit of light comedy. It takes a little time to get used to the performance happening both on stage and around the seats, but it’s well worth this set-up time for the final act’s pay-off. The ringmaster displays numerous talents: she’s the lighting technician, which means brandishing torches for parts of the show to create interesting visuals. The choreography is by far the standout, and it’s delivered to perfection by our five performers. It builds the tension throughout, which is finally released in a burst of emotion that permeates the room and receives a deserved standing ovation. The message is poignant and powerful; #since1994 is certainly a gem of the Adelaide Fringe.
