What happens when a borderline out-of-his-mind and underqualified detective takes on one last case before retirement? What starts as a seemingly straightforward police investigation, reminiscent of one of those CSI-style crime dramas, quickly spirals into something much bigger as Selena Mersey masterfully crafts a tale. On the surface, Detective Johnny is on one last hunt for a criminal, but beneath the surface the tale unfolds as an allegory for the struggles of women, especially those who seek to express themselves freely rather than conform to society’s rigid expectations.

While it all sounds like serious stuff, Mersey presents it in a way that is beautiful and hilarious at the same time. The show offers everything, from sock puppetry to live music and even an unexpected but seamless audience role play which comes out of nowhere but is still smooth. Mersey can make you laugh at her characters’ sheer absurdity while simultaneously drawing you into their world. This performance entertains, challenges, and will stay with you long after the curtains close.
