It’s 6pm on a Tuesday and you’re sitting in Adelaide’s best stand-up comedy venue, the Rhino Room. You’re either… A) A dedicated Fringe Festival lover, or B) Retired, or C) A Reviewer, or D) A huge fan of Becky Lucas. Tonight, the crowd consisted of all of the above.
Lucas’ show is quiet. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s not boring, or slow, Lucas is just softer in her delivery than many of her peers. So many comedians seem to think that the only way to impact their audience is to be loud, brash, and ‘in your face’, but Lucas proves effectively that it’s not the case. Her almost deadpan joke set-up catches the audience off guard at times, and when she follows her punchline with the wryest of little smiles, the delivery is completed well.
After a period away from the stand-up scene, bringing a baby into the world, Lucas appears happy to be back on the stage. She shares with us her experiences as a first-time pregnant woman, and a new mother, and it’s fun to hear her take on it.
The tales of her foray into TV hosting are particularly amusing, but it’s good to see her in her comfort zone of a dark comedy club. This environment allows Lucas to deliver her humour in her way, whereas television can be a bit restrictive and onerous, as Lucas explains well in her anecdotes.
Lucas’ show starting bang on time was a welcome surprise. The early finish was a small disappointment, but no one left feeling like they didn’t get their money’s worth. Covering topics as diverse as the #MeToo movement through to the Hindenburg disaster, pretty much everyone has a good chuckle along with Lucas throughout.
You’ve only got until this Sunday to see Lucas’ show, so make sure you get in. And being a 6pm start, consider teeing up another show at the Rhino Room for afterwards. The Rhino Room line-up is excellent, and Becky Lucas deserves her spot on the bill.
