Nicola Pohl, Tessa Luminati and Stephanie Beza (aka Nic, Tess and Steph), aka Sugar Bits, aka (possibly) feminist trash but most definitely not trash-trash are full of cheek, good times and irresistible energy. After a 2024 when it seemed every second cabaret show at Adelaide was sketch comedy, there’s less of it around this year, but fear not: Sugar Bits exemplify the best of the genre, with a nod and a wink and a ‘bloody hell, we’re standing on the stage singing songs and we love it’ energy which is utterly endearing.
The feminist drum circle that opens the show gives a hint of what’s to come, and while some sketches are kind of baffling, that’s all to the good; in fact, they’re at their best when they sit in the weirder moments, whether that’s singing monks, a fundamentalist-tinged barber shop quartet, or hillbilly trio The Three Genders, whose song ‘The Feminism Left My Body When...’ has the audience clamouring to add lines of their own. This is proper good night out territory and feminist domination is surely in their sights. Can’t wait for the concept album.
Sugar Bits Are: Feminist Trash, Arthur Arthouse, until Tuesday 11 March, 9.30pm.
