Casey Jay Andrews has brought a number of shows to the fringe, with one of the latest of her performances The Quiet Earth Beneath highlighting her skill at spoken word poetry.
Supported by unobtrusive musician Jack Brett, Andrews tells the story of the protagonist Sienna, in an effort to the process a loss attempting to recreate an important moment from her past. Sienna’s ritualist preparations culminate in a desperate yet hopeful attempt to create a path to closure.
Sienna’s story is rich with metaphors. During the show Andrew takes time to include personal anecdotes about going caving during her childhood. Much can be taken away from both Andrew’s and Sienna’s stories about the value of personal relationships with places and objects. It cannot be ignored how significant effort Sienna makes by looking within herself when searching for happiness. The story is engaging and induced a deep emotional response from the audience. What is interesting, and a testament to Andrew’s storytelling style is how she is able to move from one story to another without ever detracting from the central narrative.
The Quiet Earth Beneath is flowing in a poetic and emotive way, encouraging the audience to glide from one state to the next. In the intimate venue, the audience is close to Andrews both physically and metaphorically, reliving the moment with her as she describes Sienna’s almost agonising journey. The show is heavy in atmosphere with occasional moments of blackout, which is only strengthened by Brett’s soundscape and live guitar playing. They are both excellent performers and such reliable storytellers. Her calm and welcoming demeanour is perfect in welcoming the audience and inviting them to join her on a journey they have meticulously and carefully laid out. For those looking for a reflective and endearing yarn, this is the performance for you.
