#since1994
07 March 2025 - Andrew G.A stunning circus show performed by Taiwanese Eye Catching Circus, who certainly live up to their name! Not only is each act a marvel of ability, they also explore the pressures facing Taiwanese women in modern society. Often hilarious, while the ending was beautiful, moving, and poignant. If you're looking for a circus show that is stunning, funny, and moving, then #since1994 is a high recommendation. -
Fruition
07 March 2025 - Andrew G.Never have I seen a show that has been as silly as it is sexy. A one woman comedy starring Cherese Sonkkila, it consists of a variety of skits and characters, many of which somehow involve fruit, and concludes with one heck of a juicy showstopper dance performance. Sonkkila has the kind of earnest, honest energy that makes it impossible to take your eyes off her, as she bounds between characters and jokes, some saucy and some corny (in a fun way). An hour of fruity fun! -
Ajar
06 March 2025 - Andrew G.A tragic comedy, Ajar begins with two sisters contemplating life, specifically how miserable one of them has become. This sister has decided that the solution to her problems is to deliberately get Alzheimer's disease. As that may suggest, the humour here can be both dark and ridiculous. I never felt the play crossed any lines though, largely thanks to the other sister keeping things grounded. I very much appreciated that Ajar ends with a glimpse of hope, as ambiguous as it was. Recommended! -
The Ceremony
06 March 2025 - Andrew G.This is without a doubt the most fun I've had at a Fringe show this year. The show is crafted on the fly by him and prompts he gives to the crowd. Due to how much each show relies on input from the audience, every show is different. The one I went to involved pretending to be horses and being fed crackers on stage (if we wanted to do so), fart dancing, and concluded with a dance and sing-a-long to a classic banger. An absolutely fantastic time hosted be a master of improv! -
Elf Lyons: Horses
06 March 2025 - Andrew G.When Elf Lyons appears on stage, she announces that it will not be her performing but rather a mare named Treacle. What follows is an hour of the best absurdist comedy I've seen in years, definitely not performed by Lyons pretending to be a horse. Not only is Horses a silly fun time, it's also a gloriously dark one, with hilarious black humour that had me in stitches. Ending on a sweet, personal note, Horses is a ridiculous, twisted show that I can't recommend enough. -
CANCELLED - Plenty of Fish in the Sea
05 March 2025 - Andrew G.A surreal, sexual black comedy set on the high seas, there was not a moment where I was not mesmerised by what I was seeing, from the skilled physical and verbal comedy, to when things took darker, sometimes confronting turns. Labeling itself as a modern absurdist fable, Plenty of Fish is a show left open to interpretation. I've changed my mind about it twenty times since seeing it. I highly recommend seeing the show, so you can come to your own conclusion about what it's about. -
Masterpiece
05 March 2025 - Andrew G.A homage to silent film, Masterpiece follows two clowns trying to hang a piece of abstract art, their movements exaggerated with live music. Though heavily inspired by old timey comedy, the show is full of original material, including a bit involving a burglary alarm with an absolutely hilarious punchline. I had a huge smile on my face the entire time (when I wasn't laughing) as I watched two performers joyfully make complete clowns of themselves with expertly crafted physical comedy -
No Dragon No Lion
28 February 2025 - Andrew G.Performed by a team of skilled Hong Kong martial artists, the show begins with a segment with voiceover by Bruce Lee discussing how he expresses himself with his body. The performers then show the different ways they do this themselves, with fantastic physical comedy. The show then takes a more dramatic but captivating turn, as the artists re-create the historic Lion Dance and Chinese opera. Simply outstanding! -
Hell On Earth
28 February 2025 - Andrew G.A punk road trip odyssey, Hell On Earth is an angry, queer, wild ride as our two heroes journey across the Australian landscape. But it's also fun! This is thanks to the charisma and energy of the performers, who also loaded the script with some great humour. Focused on animal cruelty, and how we suffer with them as it further fuels the flames burning down the world. Featuring captivating spoken word, loud music, and some fun audience interaction, this is one HELL of a show! -
Con Coutis: CON 2077
27 February 2025 - Andrew G.More than just stand-up, this is full on science fiction comedy theatre. Okay, there's still stand-up, but there is a story here too, and it ain't just a gimmick! The setup is that all comedians have been wiped out. All comedians, except one... Con Coutis. He now has to try and save the world with comedy. What follows is expertly performed physical comedy, charismatic crowd work, and creative and clever use of technology. An amazingly funny, unique, and creative comedy show! -
Bisexual Intellectuals
27 February 2025 - Andrew G.An energetic, chaotic marvel of a show, the titular bisexuals keep the constant laughs coming with both sketch and musical comedy. All killer and no filler! Highlights include a dad joke that just keeps on dadding, an Irish jig about their "lesbian boyfriends," and a song about a condition two of the performers have that makes their nether regions too tight, and not in a fun way... but they make sure as hell we have fun learning about it! And yes! There is tap dancing! -
History of House
27 February 2025 - Andrew G.This will likely be the best dance party you go to this year! A history of house music, it starts in the 70s with soul, and progresses through to the 90s. The show features classic and remixed tunes synced with a video display in the background, but the real star is the Soweto Gospel Choir. Not only do they sound INCREDIBLE, they also put on a real show with dancing, live drumming, and crowd interaction. Such amazing talent, and such amazing energy!
